FEBRUARY, 2012

ROADRUNNER HAPPENINGS:

We had a great rally at the Triangle T Ranch in Dragoon. Diane and Charles Lemley did an outstanding job of setting up this Rally. We had tours of the Ranch where we learned of the famous people who had stayed there. We had movies, that had been filmed on the property and in the area, on their big screen TV in the Saloon. Our tours included the Amerind Foundation and the Mescal Movie Set (part of Old Tucson)

There were 20 coaches in attendance. The weather was beautiful (a little chilly at night, but, after all, this is January)

We want to thank the Roadrunners who manned a FMCA booth at Lazy Days for the Gater Fest. People showed interest, however. no one signed up

Jim and Sally Haines, from Tucson, are new members.

The Club voted to get new jackets. They are tan in color and will have the Roadrunner logo and your name on them. The Club is paying half of the $30 cost for all current members. The size chart is listed below as well as the order form.

MARCH RALLY INFORMATION:

In March our rally will be at the Good Sam Rally in Phoenix, 22-25 March, at the Phoenix International Raceway (PIR). Rita and Donne Moore and Jerry Baranick and Darlene Duis are Wagonmasters for this outing.

If you wish to go, register on line at www.TheRally.com.

After you get your confirmation number, e-mail the number, your last name and zip code to:

Travis Marricle at : TMarricle@goodsamfamily.com.

He is working with us to get us all parked together at the rally.

You can also send it to Kay McCleary at btrmac@q.com. I seem to be coordinating with him.

We will be meeting at the Wal Mart, 13055 W Rancho Santa Fe Blvd, Avondale, at 11:00 am. We will leave Wal Mart at 11:30 and caravan to the PIR. It is approximately 8 miles.

For anyone not wanting to make the trip in one day, there is dry camping at Wal Mart at the Cortaro Rd exit 246. Going north on I-10 you would exit to the left and go right under the freeway at the first light, turn left to the stop sign, turn left into the Wal Mart parking lot.

For anyone planning to do this, Don and Rita will host a dinner at their home, which just a mile east of I-10. They will be happy to provide a taxi service to and from Walmart, so you do not have to disconnect your tow vehicle.

Anyone else in the Tucson area who would like to come for dinner is welcome. Just let Rita know your plans at ritamoore110@yahoo.com, or call her at 520-744-4983. Dinner will be at 6:00

PROJECT LINUS: The Good Sam Rally is recruiting “Blanketeers” for their 2012 Blanket Drive to Benefit Project Linus, which is a nationwide non-profit organization that provides blankets for children who are seriously ill, tramatized, or otherwise in need. The Blankets are collected locally and distributed to children in hospitals, shelters, social service agencies, or anywhere a child might be in need of a big hug.

If you are interested in helping here are some guidelines to get you started.

Blankets can be crocheted, knitted, quilted or sewn.

Choose a soft, washable fabric or soft acrylic yarn. Colors should be age appropriate; colorful, bright and cheerful.

Finished blankets should be stored in a pet free, smoke free environment.

Approx. sizes suggestions: newborn: 25”by 30-35”, Toddler: 35” by 40-45”,

Child: 40” by 60”; Teen: 50” by 72”

Things To Do in Bisbee/Douglas

There’s lots to do in the Bisbee/Douglas area, and we’ve tried to list some activities and places you might not know about or might want to see again.

Queen Mine Underground Tours

We will make a group reservation for people wanting to take the mine tour. Arrive 20 minutes prior to the tour to don mining hats and slickers. The tour lasts approximately 1 hour 15 minutes and leaves from the Queen Mine Tour Bldg just south of Bisbee on Highway 80. It is 47 degrees Fahrenheit underground, so bundle up! The regular price is $13, but we will try to get a group rate if enough people are interested.

Historic Bisbee Trolley Tours

Board the trolly near Copper Queen Plaza and have a half-hour historical tour for $6. The trolly ticket is also good for discounts around town.

Muheim Museum Heritage House

This national historic site is an example of late 19 th century architecture and has been restored to its earlier elegance with period furniture. Guided tours are available from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. $4.00 donation requested. Walk up OK Street to Youngblood Hill and return by Brewery Avenue). (cars are discouraged

Bisbee Mini Museum of the Bizarre

Located inside The Source Within (28 Main Street), the Mini Museum is a collection of strange, unusual and odd objects from around the world – a mummified fairy, two-headed squirrel, atomic dime, etc. Curiosities were commonly collected in Europe in the 19 th century and proudly displayed in cabinets – hence the term “curio cabinet.” Open 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, admission is $3 per person.

Gadsden Hotel

Rebuilt in 1929 after a fire, Douglas’ Gadsden’s lobby features an Italian marble staircase, four marble columns decorated with 14 carat gold leaf and an authentic Tiffany stained-glass mural that stretches 42 feet across one wall of the mezzanine. Includes a tavern, dining room and coffee shop. Located at 1046 G Avenue, Douglas.

Bisbee Farmers’ Market

Good variety of food and produce to eat there or take home. From the only traffic circle in Bisbee, take the Bisbee Road exit to the southern end of Vista Park. There’s plenty of free parking in the park. Saturday 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM

Slaughter Ranch Museum

Texas John Slaughter (many of us grew up with Disney’s version) was one of the founders of Douglas, AZ. His ranch buildings have been meticulously restored to show what ranch life was at the turn of the century. From Douglas, go east on 15 th street – it turns into Geronimo Trail – 15 miles to the white Slaughter gate with the large “Z” representing his cattle brand. Open Wed thru Sun 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM. Admission $8.00. Get a picnic in Bisbee or Douglas to have at the ranch.

Bisbee/Douglas cont’d.

Old Bisbee Brewing Company 200 Review Alley Open Noon – 10:30 PM

They have a beer garden sampler – for those who are interested.

Hiking & Views

Head north up the Sulphur Springs Valley located just east of Bisbee, toward the Chiricahua Mountains and the Chiricahua National Monument. This “Wonderland of Rocks” is laced with hiking trails offering breathtaking views of the monument’s towering spire formations. Near the entrance of the monument, Faraway Ranch gives visitors a peek at the life of the Swedish family that helped to establish the area as a national monument.

Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area near Double Adobe

Home for Sandhill Cranes and Snow Geese, an excellent location for birders to observe nature.

Chocolate 134 Tombstone Canyon Open Fri, Sat, Sun 11:30 AM – 7:00 PM

Artisan chocolates – need I say more?! The taste is worth the price!

There are many places to eat in Bisbee; some recommendations are:

Angela’s 11 Howell Avenue (in the Copper Queen Hotel)

Breakfast 7:00 AM – 10:30 AM Lunch 11:00 AM – 2:30 PM

Serves favorites from Winchesters (previous hotel restaurant) and Italian dishes. Pricier.

Bisbee Breakfast Club 75A Erie Street Open 7:00 AM – 2:00 PM

Breakfast served all day. Lunch starts at 11:00 AM.

Bisbee Food Co-op & Deli 72 Erie Street Open 8:00 AM – 7:00 PM

Serves all-natural products. Deli has vegetarian, vegan and organic soups, baked goods

and entrees.

Café Cornucopia 14 Main Street Open 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Homemade soups, salads, sandwiches, bread. Lemonade is fresh.

Dot’s Diner 1 Old Douglas Road Open 7:30 AM – 2:30 PM

Offers coffee, pastries, pie, shakes, malts, etc. in a small diner next to Shady Dell, an

RV park made up of vintage trailers. Hopefully it’s still open.

High Desert Market and Café 203 Tombstone Canyon Open 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM

Espresso, smoothies, juices, salads, sandwiches (gluten-free $1 extra), baked goods,

soups, etc.

Jimmy’s Hot Dog Company 938 W. Hwy 92 Open 11:00 AM – 7:00 PM

They use premium meats and authentic Gonnella Italian Bread fresh from Chicago.

Poco 15 Main Street (Peddlar’s Alley) Open 11:00 AM – 8:00 PM

Mexican inspired vegetarian, but you’d never know it. Great online reviews.

Sunday brunch 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM.

Rally Reports:

RMMA Rally in Farmington, NM, October 11-16, 2011

Nine Roadrunner couples attended this rally. We were helpers in areas of food serving, driving shuttle carts and helping out in the office. This was a great opportunity for us to meet other RVers but we enjoyed mostly getting to know our own members better. The weather was great and we learned from the classes and social events at the rally.

After the rally, 5 couples went on north to Bayfield, CO, (near Durango) for a few days. We thank Jack Mayberry for setting this up for us.

The highlight of that trip was the ride on the narrow gage railroad train from Durango to Silverton. It was chilly (downright cold) riding up but quite nice coming back down on the 3 ½ hour (one way) trip. The leaves were changing and the scenery was beautiful.

November Rally in Tucson at Lazy Days RV Resort, November 17-20, 2011

We had 25 rigs (and owners) in attendance for this rally. Terry and Nancy Whaley, Wagonmasters, and Lazy Days really worked to make sure we had everything we needed. They had a class on RV maintenance and we had another guest who showed us how to “Clean the Beast”. Of course, we had our usual heavy snacks on Thursday night. Lazy Days served us breakfast and a dinner from their new restaurant.

It was great to see some members who have not been able to attend this last year.

December Rally, Amado, AZ, December 29-January 1, 2012—information below

January Rally – Triangle T Ranch, Dragoon, AZ, January 26-29, 2012

Plan to attend this rally. Diane Lemley has been working very hard to set up lots of fun things. At this point, she has a tour of the Mescal movie set, a tour of the Amerind Museum and a tour of the ranch itself. If you have a desire, she has horseback riding included.

More information will be in the January newsletter but you might want to plan on coming to this rally.

DECEMBER RALLY, DeANZA RV RESORT, AMADO, AZ

DECEMBER 29-JANUARY 1

A gala ending to 2011 and beginning to 2012 weekend is in store for Desert Roadrunners who attend the December rally. The rally will be held Dec. 29 – Jan. 1 at the DeAnza RV Park in Amado. Attendees may arrive a day early and/or stay a day late at the same rate of $33.00 per night if they let the hosts, Dave and Lois Ehlers or Chuck and Flo Emerson, know in advance.

The rally will start in the traditional way with a Happy Hour with Heavy Snacks on Thursday, Dec. 29, followed by optional games in the Rally Room. On Friday, a complimentary continental breakfast of pastries and orange juice and coffee will start the day. A business meeting and steering committee meeting may be scheduled by the President, Bill McCleary following breakfast. After lunch on our own, the hosts plan a caravan to visit the Titan Missile Museum in Green Valley. (The museum tour takes one hour and requires the navigation of 55 steps, although there is an elevator that can accommodate a maximum of four people.) If that isn’t enough fun for one day, a free Margarita party will be held before dinner in the park restaurant and then more fun and games. Dinner will be a choice of Fish and Chips or Spaghetti with a trip through the salad bar (if you can see the salad bar after free Margaritas) or a Burger and Fries with a trip through the salad bar for an additional $1. Those with any energy left, may play cards or games later.

After a restful night in your RV breakfast will be served in the restaurant. The menu is varied and the price of $4-$8 will be too, depending on your order, but includes coffee, but not juice. Juice will cost an extra $.80 if desired. The rest of the morning is open for visiting, resting or sightseeing and then lunch on your own. The hosts plan some games after lunch, followed by another Happy Hour in the Rally Room before the grand end-of-the-year gala. The gala will start with dinner in the restaurant, followed by a dance. The $15 price will include the dinner (of chicken, salmon, steak or vegetarian option with all the trimmings) followed by the dance with hats and noise makers, snacks and a champagne toast at midnight (east coast time). There will be a cash bar during dinner and the dance, with costs a very modest $3 for house wine, $2 for domestic beer and $3 for imported beer, $4 for mixed drinks or $5 for premium call brands mixed drinks. Arizona law prohibits bringing personal alcohol into the restaurant/bar area while it is open for business. After another restful night, breakfast will be served in the restaurant on Sunday.

DeAnza RV Resort features the following among its many amenties:

Heated indoor salt water pool, indoor pickleball court, exercise room, game room,

Library and TV room

You need to have your reservation form in to Dave Ehlers by December 12th.
