SEPTEMBER 2011 |
President Bill’s Corner:
I want to welcome all of you back and hope everyone enjoyed the summer. Dee Coleman deserves a big thank you for keeping us up to date the travels of our Roadrunners. It sounds as if many of us were out and about. A lot of things happened this summer for several Roadrunners. The Monument Fire in Hereford had the McClearys, Swarners and Jingles evacuated from their homes in June. Jingles had damage, but the rest of us just had ashes to clean up. Don Moore, Bill McCleary,Yvonne Jingles and Walter McCalle had medical issues over the summer. Hopefully everyone is recovering and we will see everyone this fall.
We are looking forward to a great year. The rally lineup is on the website. We need a few assistant Wagon masters. Working with an experienced Wagon master is a good way to get to know how to set up a rally. It really isn’t hard, you just have to do it. We have a “Rally Planning Sheet” to follow.
We have a welcome back greeting to Randy and Kathy Richard from Sierra Vista. Their circumstances are allowing them to join us again.
Rally information and registration regarding September’s Get Together at McCleary’s in Hereford are included in this newsletter. .
Diane’s Corner:
A reminder: Don’t forget that your dues of $15.00 are due not later than December 1, 2010. Send you checks to our treasurer, Neil Robson at 14050 Race Horse Place, Vail, AZ 85541.
From our Webmaster, Alan Bottorff: Subject: Passwords on the Internet:
We have passwords for our members who have accounts. These Passwords are stored in plain text. They are visible to anyone who can gain access. Members should be aware of this and understand to not use the same password for any other use, i.e. don’t use the same password for a bank account.
Any members who wish to have their phone number or other information can do so themselves, or let me know to do it for them.
Desert Roadrunners web site is a fairly easy site to break into, so keep personal information at a minimum.

E-MAILS- Please keep your e-mails current if you wish to continue receiving your news letters
Extra Newsletter: There are several items which need attention, so we are putting out an extra newsletter this year.
President’s Corner:
Note: I have changed my e-mail from btrmac@msn.com to btrmac@q.com.
If you are planning on going to the Rally in Farmington, NM, the registration form is on our website or in the July issue of the FMCA magazine. The volunteer duties will be inside so weather won’t be a factor.
Dates: October 11-15th. We will need to be there earlier. More information will follow.
End of Season Get-together. There were over 40 of us who attended the May luncheon at the Vale Steak House. We want to thank Frank Boisvert for setting it up. It was really good to see some people who haven’t been able to attend our rallies in recent times. It must have been a success as the noise level was quite high!
News: There were a couple of wonderful happenings that have occurred: Ralph Moore has sold his house much to his relief. Jerry Baranick and Darlene Duis are now engaged. No wedding date yet.
Congratulations to all three of our members.
This letter is later than planned due to the chaos caused by the Monument Fire here in Hereford. Many of us were evacuated for a week or more. Fortunately, none of us Road Runners lost our houses that I know of. Jingles lost a barn, a greenhouse and part of a garage, but their house is okay. They live just across from where the fire jumped highway 92 the first time. It came within a block of our house. Our son lost his storage shed and his whole yard, but the house is okay. Dave & Tonia Swarner were with us at Ft. Huachuca Fam. Camp and are okay. Thank goodness for motor homes. We all had a lot of ashes and soot to clean off our porches.
On Fathers’ Day, Bill needed to have emergency hernia surgery and ended up in the hospital for 13 days. We are all getting back to normal now.
Rally Schedule for 2011-2012
Things can always change. Note that the lines are for people to sign up to help. It is not hard to be a Wagon Master, especially if you can work with someone who has done it before.

April Rally report:
The Holbrook rally was ranked as one of the best rallies we have had, by the folks who attended. Mayberry’s did an excellent job of planning for us.
We enjoyed seeing and learning about the Petrified Forest, in spite of the windy conditions, and it was windy and dusty. We found out that there is petrified wood in every state in the US.
The Rock- Art- Ranch, a working ranch, (south between Holbrook and Winslow) was unbelievable to include a herd of buffalo (and a new calf), many antiques used in the “olden” days, Indian ruins and a canyon of petrogliphs of world reknown. They also had a collection of ancient Navajo pots, bowls, and tools, which they keep under air conditioning and glass to preserve them.
We also found that “On Star” doesn’t always find a car out in the desert when keys get locked inside. In spite of cell phone reception and one member with a GPS and coordinates, the satellite could not open the car door. We have a literal meaning of “back at the ranch”. That is where we ended up waiting for a locksmith to come from Winslow to open the car door. Fortunately, we had taken 4 cars out on the tour of the ranch so no one was stranded. The members of the family at the ranch were extremely cordial and helpful. We all stuck it out together and had a few laughs, as well.
Of course, most of the ladies of the group had to watch “The Wedding of the Century” from about 2-4 am. Friday morning. We thought about a pj party in the rec hall, but decided it would be better to do it from our own rigs.
We ate out twice- one Mexican and one Italian. Both were excellent. We ended up with a good potluck dinner on Sat. night.
Chapter History as remembered by Ralph Moore.
This is a column that I will begin to run in June. We are having problems with our computers talking to one another and need to work them out.

APRIL, 2011 |
It is hard to believe that we are coming up on the end of a very active Roadrunner year. We have one more rally in Holbrook and the end of year luncheon on May 19.
February Rally Report: Our rally was held at Quail Ridge RV Resort in Whetstone on February 10-13th. We had a good time visiting and eating. The main event for this rally was “The Cowboy Poets and Music Gathering” held in Sierra Vista. We all enjoyed the music and poems. Some of them really had us laughing. On Saturday night the group held an impromptu BBQ led by hosts Dan and Lucinda Bonillas. We were glad to see the Rashes, as they had not been with us for some time. We also had 2 guests – Schroeders from Oregon and another couple who belong to FMCA who were in the area and had seen our schedule in the Familyh Motorhoming magazine.
March Rally Report: This rally was held March 10-13 at Campground Buena Tierra in Casa Grande. Hosts Whaleys and Silvas did something a little different for our Thursday night Happy Hour. We had “Tacos in a Bag”. The main event for this rally was the Re-enactment at Picacho Peak State Park. We enjoyed watching the way soldiers had to live and “fight” in the 1860. On Friday night we had a nice dinner at Eva’s Mexican Resturant in Casa Grande. They were well organized and served all 20+ of us in excellent time.
Sunshine Lady’s Corner: (Dee Coleman) I need your help in keeping you informed about concerns of our members. Please let me know so that our members, who are in need of our prayers and encouragement or help, know that their Desert Roadrunner friends are concerned about them. My phone number is 540-444-6816. My e-mail is ddcoleman1@live.com
Please keep your e-mail addresses up to date.

HOLBROOK RALLY
The Holbrook rally will be from April 27-May 1. Holbrook is located in Navajo County with an elevation of 5,080 ft and a population of over 5,600. Navajo County came into being on March 21, 1895 when the legislature of Arizona Territory voted to slice a long narrow strip from the eastern side of Apache County. In compliance with the decision, Winslow and Holbrook both vied for the distinction of becoming the county seat. An election gave Holbrook the honor by 162 votes. The old historic court house is now a museum and opens to the public. Visitors step back in time and learn about the area’s wild history.
There are many day trips available from Holbrook. They include:
Canyon de Chelley
Petrified Forest & Painted Desert
Old Historic Court House
Navajo & Hopi Reservations
Meteor Crater
The White Mountains/Hon-dah Casino
Hubbell Trading Post
Another site to visit is the Rock Art Ranch. It offers a variety of experiences for the most avid adventure or most casual tourist. The ranch is situated in a remote area between Holbrook and Winslow Az. Off old route 66. It is the home to one of the finest stands of Anasazi petroglyphs in the world. Price for 2 is $35, 3or more is $25 and groups of 10 or more is less. This includes the Museum, ranch and Petroglyphs. The petroglyphs bear evidence of an unusually imaginative and vanishing culture. The rock art remains in pristine condition in a watered canyon of over powering beauty.
The Petrified Forest-Painted Desert, petroglyphs, and pronghorns. There is so much to experience at Petrified Forest National Park, from a treasure trove of Traissic Fossils to the only remnant of Route 66 in a national park. Take a moment to contemplate the vast landscape of colorful badlands, touch the surface of a fallen tree that was alive more than 200 million years ago, and view a symbol carved centuries ago by the ancestral Peubloan people. This place is a surprising land of scenic wonders and fascinating science.
Area Restaurants: There are many restaurants in Holbrook, some within walking distance from the park. They provide a variety of menus to choose from. They include but not limited to:
Mandarin Beauty Chinese Restaurant
Mesa Italiana Restaurant
Wayside Café
Bubba Big Pig Bar BBQ
Joe & Aggie’s café
Young’s Corral
Aliberto’s Mexican Food
Connie and I hope you will attend the rally with us. We added an extra day because of the distance we all have to travel. We hope this will be the first of many longer trips the club can enjoy as we discover the great state of Arizona.
Safe Travels where ever you may go.
Connie and Jack.

MARCH, 2011 |
January Rally Report: Those of us who went to Ft. McDowell had a good time. There were 8 Roadrunner rigs in attendance. Seems as if all we did was eat, but had a good time doing it. We went to an outdoor “camp” and cooked our own hot dogs and s’mores. We cracked our own crab at the seafood buffet. We were given $15.00 credts to play the slot machines. A few people came out ahead, but the rest of us used up our credits.
The Steering Committee came up with next year’s rally schedule and the next year’s officers’ slate was presented at the business meeting.
Frank Boisvert volunteered to host the May 21st luncheon at the Vale Steak House.
The April rally in Holbrook is April 27-May 1, not 21-24th as previously noted.

MARCH RALLY TO BE HELD IN CASA GRANDE
The March Desert Roadrunners’ Rally will be held March 10-13, 2011. Our main event of the rally will be the Civil War in the Southwest Battle re-enactment. You will pay for your camping except for the first night (the club has paid for it to but we need to be reimbursed for it. The campground will escort you your site. Thursday night will be Taco night. We will be doing Taco-in-a- bag, $2.00 for all you can eat. You bring a salad or desert. Friday night we will have dinner at Eva’s Mexican Restaurant. The food is outstanding and dinner will be ordered from the menu and pay as you go. Directions will be provided at the rally. The re-enactment will be held on 12 and 13 March. A copy of the re-enactment flyer follows. We feel that Saturday will be the best day to go and it will be best to let you attend the events of the re-enactments on your own. We will provide you directions at the rally. It is approximately 22 miles from the campground to the events. Rally reports:
We started the new year off with a bang at DeAnza Trails RV Resort in Amado, AZ. It was coooold- in the high teens at night and only in the 40’s in the day time. We were a hardy bunch- all 22 rigs of us – however, not too many were sitting outside! Most of us made it to midnight on New Year’s Eve. The park people took good care of us.
We welcomed 4 new members – Scanlans, McVeys, McClellens, and Unicumes.
Rally Changes:
February Rally. 10-13 February. We were not able to secure sites in the Florence area. The Club voted to return to Quail Ridge RV resort, just north of Huachuca City, and it was decided that we would attend the Cowboy Poets and Music Gathering in Sierra Vista as our main attraction. Several of us have attended it before and found it to be very enjoyable.
The March Rally has also been changed from the end of the month to the 10th -13th so we can take in the Civil War Reenactment at Picacho Peak. More information is due out soon, as reservations need to be in earlier than usual.
